Ghana MTN FA Cup: Karim Zito targets season’s double after King Faisal win

Head coach of Asante Kotoko Karim Zito has expressed delight in their qualification for the Ghana MTN FA Cup round of 16.

The Porcupine Warriors dug deep to beat local rivals King Faisal 1-0 on Wednesday courtesy Saaka Dauda’s late first half goal at the Baba Yara Stadium in the round of 32.

Karim Zito who guided the record Ghana Premier League holders to the FA Cup title last season, shared thoughts on their win against King Faisal.

Karim Zito has FA Cup and league in sight

“It’s part of our objective to qualify for the FA Cup and then win the league so I took it very seriously but at the same time I was managing my players because we are playing on Sunday again against Berekum Chelsea which is another tough match for us ,” Karim Zito said.

Asante Kotoko will turn their attention to the second half of the premier league season when they host former champions Berekum Chelsea in week 18 at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday January 11 and Karim Zito remains confident of a victory.

“For me my expectation is to win and continue chasing the league and we still hope we can do it.

Asante Kotoko are equally chasing the league title as they sit in third on the league table with 30 points from 17 matches, two points behind second placed GoldStars and four adrift of leaders Medeama SC.

In another top liner of the round, current Ghana Premier League leaders Medeama defeated reigning top flight champions GoldStars 3-1 at the Tarkwa TnA Park with Kingsley Braye scoring a hat-trick to propel the Mauve and Yellow into the Round of 16.

Heart of Lions, who have gone seven premier league matches without a win, managed to beat Division One side Na God FC 2-0 at the Kpando Stadium to qualify for the next round.

Another Ghana Premier League side, Swedru All Blacks, progressed to the Round of 16 with a 5-4 penalty shootout win over second tier side Sefwi All Stars after the match ended goalless at the full time whistle at the Swedru Stadium. The game between Tamale City and Karela United ended goalless at full time at the Aliu Mahama Stadium, but Tamale City won 14-13 via the penalty shootout to move into the next phase.
