Ghana Premier League: Accra Lions shred Kotoko, Hearts of Oak crumble at Aduana

Asante Kotoko’s Premier League title chances was dealt a huge blow when Accra Lions sent early shivers down their spine with two first half goals.

The week 22 outstanding fixture was played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, April 16 where Jacob Awoute and Yao Sokpoli found the net on the 19th and 41st minutes respectively.

The brace from the struggling Accra Lions separated them and Asante Kotoko, moving into the half time break.

Accra Lions further nailed Kotoko’s coffin in the second half when a fast break on the right side of the field positioned David Akintunde, whose left-footed strike beat Kotoko keeper, Frederick Asare to peg the score line at 3-0 on the 74th minute.

The score line remained the same when the full time whistle arrived, pushing the Porcupine Warriors into 3rd on the league on 47 points, one behind Nations FC who defeated Dreams FC 1-0. Gold Stars moved into the top spot with 50 points after beating Bechem United by 2-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyearbour Park.

Elsewhere at the Nana Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa, Aduana Stars showed grit against Hearts of Oak with Sam Adams' powerful left footed strike in the penalty area beating Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, in post for the Phobians.

The record FA Cup holders could not withstand the energy of Aduana Stars who doubled their lead from former ASEC striker, Abdel Latif Bamba’s free header on the 88th minute. The defeat dropped Hearts of Oak down the ladder into 7th on 41 points from 27 league matches this season.
