Ghana Premier League: Bashir Hayford appalled by Heart of Lions’ poor scoring rate

Head coach of Heart of Lions, Bashir Hayford has lashed out at the club’s attackers over their poor goal scoring rate in the Ghana Premier League.

Lions suffered a 1-0 loss during their week 16 encounter at home to now joint leaders Medeama in a game they wasted glorious scoring chances.

The Kpando based club now have lost four consecutive games with two draws in their last six fixtures, results that has left coach Bashir Hayford asking questions about the scoring abilities of his strikers.

“Yes [it’s a cause for worry] because the attackers are not helping us, if you see the chance that we got [against Medeama] it takes a class one striker to even score and number of chances that we had in previous matches they couldn’t score,” Bashir Hayford told Heart of Lions TV.

“Now you put them together, you drill them but they come into the match and they can’t score and it has been a headache for most clubs in Ghana, getting strikers to score for you is a difficult thing but I always make sure I make something out of what I have.

“So we will still go back, I am a teacher and I won’t stop teaching them. I will still go and teach them, if they pick it is good for them.”

Coach Bashir Hayford has admitted that he would need to reinforce his existing squad for the remainder of the season. “The only place we need now is an attacking midfielder and maybe one striker, our midfielders are not attacking oriented, they are all defensive oriented so if I get two attacking midfielders and one striker then we will put some on transfer or on loan.

“But going into the market again, judging from what I have done, we shouldn’t have gone to the market again at all but this is the situation where everyone is saying we have to get some people to come and beef up the squad. I think we will bounce back, this is football.

Heart of Lions’ four consecutive losses have come against Medeama SC, Samartex, Nations FC and Aduana FC with two draws against Karela United and Vision FC after their last 2-0 home win over Young Apostles.

They occupy 8th on the league table with 23 points from 16 games with a local derby at Hohoe United set to close the first half of the season on Sunday, January 4.
