Asante Kotoko got their season off to a winning start against former champions, Berekum Chelsea in match day 1 on Saturday, September 13.
The Porcupine Warriors, who had mixed pre-season exercise, put a goal past the Blues courtesy Albert Amoah’s second half strike at the Golden City Park.
The late strike ended Kotoko’s jinx of having not won at the Golden City Park since 2010, a feat that brought smiles onto the face of head coach, Abdul Karim Zito.
The experienced trainer says that, the win will be a morale booster ahead of the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round against Kwara United of Nigeria in Accra.
“I am very happy that we have won because in a competition like this you only have to win to get more points, aside [from] that, there is a historical issue about that for fifteen years Kotoko have not won a game here and we are able to break that jinx,” Karim Zito told the media.
“I said before the game that there is always one day out of everything to change your life. At the end of the day, after a hard fought football, I have done justice to Kotoko.
“When you look at the way we created a lot of chances, assuming we ended this game in a draw, I think it’s fair so I’m very happy for my boys and it will also ginger us for the CAF Confederation Cup in Accra.”
Asante Kotoko will open their CAF Confederation Cup campaign against Kwara United on Sunday, September 21 at the Accra Sports Stadium with the reverse fixture after a week in Ilorin.
