Ghana Premier League: Heart of Lions go top with Holy Stars win

Heart of Lions devoured Holy Stars in week seven of the Ghana Premier League, beating the visitors by 3-0 at the Kpando Stadium on Friday.

Heart of Lions needed to redeem their image after suffering their first loss, a 3-1 defeat in week six against Gold Stars at the Duns Park on Monday.

The Kpando based club showed grit and energy from the onset of the game with Holy Stars struggling to contain their incursions.

The pressure paid off when Michael Ephson’s shot was denied by the side post but Kwadwo Obeng Junior showed up in the penalty area to tap in the opener in the 35th minute.

Holy Stars came close to finding the equalizer in the 40th minute when striker Prince Gamor outwitted defender Ruben Hennessy in his own half but the effort missed the post by a whisker to keep the score at 1-0 for Heart of Lions.

Michael Ephson made a solo run minutes after Holy Stars missed their chance when he latched on to a long pass late in the game, beating his marker before slotting the ball behind Prince Asempa in post for Holy Stars heading into the half time break.

Heart of Lions did not sleep on their oars in the second half with Holy Stars coming out of their shells momentarily to threaten the home side’s goal area but were not clinical enough to pull a goal back.

The hosts made the score line 3-0 when Anthony Owusu pounced on a poorly cleared ball by Holy Stars keeper, Prince Asempa to lob in a long ranger in the dying embers of the game.

Referee Alex Amoabeng whistled for the end of the game with the winners going top of the log on 14 points from seven matches. Basake Holy Stars are yet to win a game in seven matches, recording only two draws in the process and lying bottom of the table.
