Hearts of Oak managed to hold Bechem United to a goalless draw in Matchday Four of the Ghana Premier League on Friday, September 3 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park.
Hearts of Oak needed all three points to go on ten points with Bechem United chasing their first victory from the ongoing season.
It was Bechem United who piled early pressure on Hearts of Oak in the opening minutes, earning two straight corner kicks but keeper Benjamin Asare was on hand to deal with the situation. Hearts of Oak however managed to soak the incessant pressure before coming out of their shells with a number of incursions from wing play.
Amankwah Baafi outwitted his marker down the right side before sending in a sumptuous cross but Kwabena Owusu’s shot ricocheted off an opponent falling the way of Hamza Issah whose effort in Bechem United’s penalty area went wide off the post for the Hunters goal kick in the 22nd minute
Bechem United put the 2004 CAF Confederation Cup winners under pressure with Adams Sanut’s dangerous cross but keeper Benjamin Asare managed to flick it out for Kelvin Osei Asibey to clear the lines.
Augustine Okrah lofted a ball into Hearts of Oak’s penalty area, trying to locate Emmanuel Abban however his header made no impact, keeping the game goalless with five minutes to end the first half. The last good bite of the first half went to Hearts of Oak whose attack on the left side however failed to yield a good result with poor crosses from Ransford Mensah.
Bechem United came into the second half well fired up and it didn’t take longer for Emmanuel Abban to send a long ranger which was parried to the corner by keeper Benjamin Asare in the 48th minute.
The Phobians came under intense pressure once again but Adams Sanut blasted a perfect shot into the waiting arms of Hearts keeper, Benjamin Asare in the 53rd minute.
A ding-dong affair ensued in the 67th minute with both sides attacked each other fiercely but none of them converted the chance into a goal.
Bechem United turned much of the heat on Hearts of Oak with threatening attacks and the Phobians going to sleep in the latter stages of the game. With the five minutes of added time exhausted, the referee blew for the end of the game with Hearts of Oak going on eight points and Bechem United picking their second point of the campaign to stay on two points from four matches.
