The Porcupine Warriors nicked a 1-0 victory, ending Hearts of Oak’s unbeaten run nine games into the season.
A quarter of the first half went slightly the way of Asante Kotoko, who made a few threatening attacks into Hearts of Oak area but struggled to translate that into goals. Hearts of Oak resorted to sitting deep into their area with the aiming of catching the Porcupine Warriors on the break.
Kotoko retained control of the game creating a number of scoring chances yet fluffed them to the shock of their supporters. The Porcupines were awarded a penalty when Peter Amidu Acquah was brought down the penalty area by Yaw Amankwaa Baafi in the 44th minute.
Morifing Donzo elected himself to take the spot kick and the striker scored in the 45th minute, his first since joining the club. The Guinean import’s penalty separated the two sides into the half time break.
The second half was not different as Kotoko chased their second despite Hearts of Oak coming up with flashes of attack from substitute Martin Karikari. However, Kotoko quickly turned defence into attack with Kelvin Osei Asibey’s defensive error but Morifing Donzo smashed into an opponent in the 66th minute.
Kotoko’s defender Samba O’Neil came close to increasing the tally but his thumping header from a corner kick missed the upright narrowly minutes after squandering the earlier opportunity.
Hearts of Oak looked better with possession but lacked the cutting edge to pry open Kotoko’s back line. Hearts of Oak for moment thought they had found the equalizer late in the game but Mawuli Wayo’s overhead kick was adjudged offside.
The score line stayed at 1-0 for Asante Kotoko, pushing them into 7th on the league with 14 points from six matches with three outstanding matches to clear.
