Asante Kotoko’s sacking of coach Prosper Narteh Ogum has drawn plenty of debate in the Ghanaian media circles with many pundits not surprised due to the club’s recent losing streak.
The Porcupine Warriors parted ways with the University of Cape Coast lecturer after a string of poor performances in the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League. The record league holders lost by 3-0 in an outstanding Week 22 fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium before a further 2-0 defeat Nations FC in Week 28.
Ogum returned to the club in 2023 after the club did away with his services in the 2021-22 season when he led them to the title. His place has since been taken over by club legend Karim Zito who will serve on interim basis and also double as the Technical Director.
Opoku Nti, who finished as runner-up for the prestigious France Football African Footballer of the Year award in 1983, believes Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee took the right decision in sacking Prosper Ogum.
“I believe the timing was right. We had about six matches left before Zito arrived now it’s five and I think it was the correct decision. The way Kotoko was playing match after match something wasn’t clicking. It’s better to sacrifice one individual than risk the entire team falling apart.”
“This happens even in Europe. I knew that if they changed the coach, Kotoko could win two or three matches in a row”
Karim Zito began his Kotoko spell on a good note, inflicting a 1-0 win over Aduana Stars on Sunday afternoon, ensuring the Porcupine Warriors return to winning ways after back-to-back defeats in the top-flight.
