Medeama SC fought from a goal down to draw 1-1 against newly promoted side, Hohoe United in a Ghana Premier League week eight fixture at the Hohoe Stadium on Saturday.
The Mauve and Yellow needed a win badly to retain the top spot with Hohoe United equally in need of points to move out of the drop zone.
Hohoe United shot ahead with a fast break down the right side of the field which saw Francis Odoom well positioned in Medeama’s penalty area to coolly tap home the opener in the 6th minute.
Medeama however responded quickly minutes later with a ferocious drive from Emmanuel Owusu just outside the penalty area but Hohoe United keeper, Kweku Musah palmed the effort into a corner kick which was eventually wasted by the visitors.
Medeama made a good build up from a corner kick with Emmanuel Owusu’s thunderbolt parried into the way of Kamaradini Mamudu but the defender headed the ball back into the hands of Kweku Musah in post for Hohoe United in the 17th minute.
The former champions shot their game a notch higher for the next ten minutes, stringing passes cleverly in every department of the field. Hohoe United however caught Medeama panting for breath when David Anane went in between two defenders after latching on to a perfect pass, but he blew wide his opportunity in the 27th minute.
David Anane made a swift run past Medeama centre-back, Rich Sackey before pouncing onto a long pass, however his volley was not well launched enough to beat Medeama keeper Felix Kyei in the 36th minute.
Medeama’s incessant pressure paid off with three minutes to the half time break when striker, Abdul Salam headed in the equalizer from Prince Owusu’s sublime left-footed cross which eventually separated the two sides into recess.
Medeama came into the second half the better side, controlling the game with total ball possession with Hohoe United resorting to sitting deep and trying to catch the visitors on the break a couple of times.
Hohoe United keeper Kweku Musah salvaged a dire situation when he punched away a squeezing curler from Prince Owusu in the 73rd minute with Medeama making nothing out of the corner kick.
Abass Ganiu for once thought he had found Hohoe United’s winner in the 90th minute but his header was flagged offside, leaving the fans on a jagged edge. Hohoe United made a last gasp attack in search of the winner but Medeama remained resolute, clearing their lines as the game ended 1-1. Medeama per the result remained on top of the league log with 17 points with Hohoe United on nine points in ninth position in eight matches.
