Ghana Premier League: Medeama stretch lead, Kotoko drop points

Asante Kotoko held reigning Ghana Premier League champions GoldStars to a goalless draw at the Duns Park on Saturday.

 The FA Cup holders walked into the game following a goalless draw at home to former champions Berekum Chelsea last week, with GoldStars suffering a loss at Bechem United.

Both sides were bent on finding the back of the net early in the game but it was Guinean import, Morifing Donzo, who came close to finding Kotoko’s breakthrough. However, GoldStars keeper Emmanuel Kobi blocked the effort over the line.

GoldStars responded quickly with Prince Opoku Agyemang, who latched on to Vincent Atingah’s long pass but his drive went over the cross bar in the 28th minute.

Kobi came to the rescue of GoldStars following a header from newly signed Dogo Yakubu in the dying embers of the first half.

GoldStars resumed the second half with Samuel Attah Kumi, who rose above Kotoko’s defence but his connection on Justice Arthur’s cross missed the crossbar by a whisker in the 57th minute.

Kotoko mounted incessant pressure then on however GoldStars back line kept calm in the face of those challenging moments, clearing their line desperately.

Kotoko’s new recruit Dogo Yakubu called Kobi to duty with a brilliant strike just outside the penalty area and that was equally met with a stupendous save.

GoldStars were dealt a huge blow when their their top striker Samuel Attah Kumi limped off the pitch through an ankle injury in the 67th minute. His place was taken by Burkina Faso striker Razack Sanou.

Samba O’neil headed in what looked like Kotoko’s opener but referee Julian Nunoo whistled for a controversial infringement in the dying embers of the game.

The game ended in stalemate with Kotoko moving into third on 32 points same as Hearts of Oak, Aduana and Hearts of Oak with GoldStars sitting second on 33 points.

League leaders, Medeama stretched their lead after coming from a goal down to beat Vision FC at the Nii Adjei Okraku II Park in Tema.
