Ghana Premier League: Nations FC halt Medeama’s 17-game unbeaten run

Nations FC came from a goal down to beat Medeama SC 2-1 on Friday, halting the visitors’ seventeen game unbeaten run during their Ghana Premier League week 21 fixture at the Dr. Kyei Sports Complex.

It was Medeama who began the game on a good note, threatening the hosts before shooting themselves ahead with Kingsley Braye rising to push in Fuzzy Taylor’s corner kick in the 9th minute.

Nations FC, however, recovered to find the equalizer eleven minutes later when Kwame Boakye struck from 20 yards into Medeama’s area but the ball ricocheted off defender Yussif Mubarik for a corner kick. Razak Simpson then leapt above Medeama defenders to head in the equalizer from Richard Danso’s well floated corner kick in the 19th minute.

Moments after the equalizer, Prince Owusu was presented with a fine opportunity to put Medeama ahead once again but he tapped his effort over the touch for a goal kick heading into the water break in the 25th minute.

The hosts continued to mount pressure on Medeama and minutes on, Yaw Osei handled Richard Danso’s lofted ball in the area with the referee pointing to the spot for a penalty kick which Simpson brilliantly converted minutes before the half time break.

The second half brought a lot of lightning performances from both sides but none succeeded in getting a goal in the large part of the minute. Medeama came close to finding the leveler but midfielder, Salim Adams thunderbolt was perfectly dealt with by Nations FC keeper Hadina Bariu late in the game.

The hosts quickly switched the heat on Medeama, resulting in a free kick of which Kwame Boakye’s blistering strike was parried out of play in added time. Coach Frimpong Manso would smile away with the three points following the end of the game. Nations have now collected 27 points moving into 8th on the standings while Medeama remain at the top with 43 points pending the remaining matches.
