Ghana Premier League: Nations FC boycott game, Amoah hat-trick sinks Medeama

The penultimate Ghana Premier League fixtures produced interesting fixtures on Sunday across various venues.

Asante Kotoko’s quest to finish in top four was kept alive when they squeezed a 3-2 victory over Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium.

It was Medeama who shot themselves ahead with just five minutes played when Kingsley Braye went in between two defenders to slot the ball behind Kotoko keeper Mohamed Camara.

However, Michael Kyei Dwamena was brought down by Mubarik Yussif with referee Lateef Adaari pointing to the penalty spot in favour of the Porcupine Warriors.

Albert Amoah made no mistake in planting the ball behind Felix Kyei in Medeama’s post for Kotoko’s equalizer on the 23rd minute, chalking his tenth goal of the season.

Albert doubled the lead for Kotoko when he out jumped all Medeama defenders to head in right-back Lord Amoah’s incisive cross in the 42nd minute, leaving the score at 2-1 going into halftime.

Medeama looked better in the beginning of the second department of the mostly pinning Kotoko into their own half.

The hardwork and composure paid off with Manuel Mantey pulling level for the Mauve and Yellow when he swerved an array of Kotoko defenders in the 67th minute to beat goalkeeper Mohamed Camara.

However, Albert Amoah sent Kotoko ahead once again with yet another perfect header from Emmanuel Antwi’s free kick on the 77th minute. The hat-trick is Amoah’s 12th of the season and Kotoko claimed all three points to to stay third on 58 points from 33 matches.

The title race was left open heading into the final day fixtures when Gold Stars defeated Berekum Chelsea by 3-2 at Golden City Park to go level on 60 points as Nations FC who were losing by 1-0 at Basake Holy Stars before Nations quit the game over refereeing decision.

In the relegation battle, Karela United boosted their chances of staying afloat with a 2-0 home win over Young Apostles at the Tamale Stadium. Accra Lions were dealt a huge blow when they lost 2-0 to Dreams fc at home.

Hearts of Oak kept their top four position intact with an easy 2-0 win over the relegated Legon Cities.
