Nations FC returned to the top of the 2024/25 Ghana Premier League table after brushing aside relegation battlers Legon Cities by a 4-1 score in Monday’s Week 31 fixture at the Legon Sports Stadium.
Nations FC had dropped into second on 54 points after the weekend’s round of matches but their emphatic victory against the Royals sent them above Gold Stars who won three forfeit points against defunct Nsoatreman.
Kelvin Ampoful fired Nations FC into the lead in the 24th minute before Albert Yeboah’s strike ricocheted off the body of Nations keeper, Rabin Ousmane for Legon Cities’ equalizer on the 37th minute.
The goal for each side separated the game moving into the half time break. Nations FC returned for the second half looking more purposeful but Faisal Charwetey and Emmanuel Annor wasted several chances. Legon Cities’s Aaron Quartery came closer to putting them ahead but his effort went a fraction wide off Nations FC’S post.
The visitors’ however took advantage of Legon Cities’ lapses with Emmanuel Annor’s solo run after a fast break in the 64th minute to shoot themselves into a 2-1 lead. Nations FC kept mounting incessant pressure on the visibly weak Legon Cities which eventually resulted into the third goal from the boot of Sadick Alhassan who tapped in Emmanuel Annor’s perfect pass in the 84th minute.
Nations FC did not rest on their oars when Kelvin Ampoful scored their fourth and his second of the game in added time to end it all at 4-1 in full time.
The win gives Nations FC 57 points, one better than Gold Stars after 31 matches played. Heart of Lions and Asante Kotoko share 54 points in third and fourth with Hearts of Oak in 5th with 49 points with three games to end the season.
