Ghana Premier League: Samba O’neil’s penalty helps Kotoko sink Young Apostles

Asante Kotoko left it late to beat Young Apostles 2-1 in their week six outstanding Ghana Premier League fixture at the Baba Yara Stadium on Wednesday.

Kotoko fired themselves ahead in the 52nd minute with Hubert Gyau after a barren first half before the visitors pulled level just a minute after they had gone down.

Coach Karim Zito’s charges took the game to Young Apostles from then on but they kept fluffing glorious scoring opportunities with Guinean import, Morifing Donzo the biggest culprit.

Young Apostles equally came up with a number of fast breaks at the flanks leading to clear cut chances to take the lead, however, they lacked the ultimate touch in the final third.

Asante Kotoko however persisted, winning a penalty late in the game with captain of the side, Samba O’neil scoring to win the three points for the two time African champions.

The victory takes Kotoko into 4th on the league with 19 points, same as reigning champions Gold Stars from nine matches and one outstanding to play at a later date. Young Apostles on the other hand sit in 8th on the league log with 14 points from 10 matches.

Medeama SC and Heart of Lions share 21 points apiece on top of the league log with Aduana following with 20 points from 10 matches.
