Accra Hearts of Oak quest to reach the top four places on the league log was kept intact when they won at Accra Lions on Sunday.
The Phobians had to dig deep to claim all three points at the WAFA Park on match day 15. It was diminutive midfielder Hassan Husein who headed the Phobians into the lead in the 32nd minute of the first half.
The result remained same with both sides failing to score in the first half with Hearts of Oak looking slightly above their opponent. The game went on recess with Hussein’s goal separating the two sides.
The second half resumed with Accra Lions looking more serious and equally having a lion share of the ball possession. Nigerian import Lucky Nwafor tormented the Phobians goal area which resulted in the equalizer on the 53rd minute. Nwafor latched on to a loose ball on the right side of Hearts of Oak’s goal area before going past defender Kelvin Osei Asibey to put the ball behind Sherif Shuaib.
Accra Lions continued their insurgence, creating clear cut goal scoring chances by using the available spaces but knocking the past Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Sherif Shuaib was lacking.
The Phobians on the other hand relied on the offside trap to keep the stubborn Accra Lions forwards at bay. Hearts of Oak were punished for relying on the offside trap when substitute, Ezekiel Alladoh tapped in for Accra Lions second goal of the afternoon on the 73rd minute.
The Phobians were dealt a huge blow when physical trainer Enoch Jordan Daitey was shown a red card for remonstrating with the referee over Accra Lions’ second goal. However, Hearts of Oak were brought back into the game when substitute Mawuli Wayo’s solo effort from 20 yards put them level at 2-2 on the 80th minute.
Wayo confirmed his status as a super substitute when he took advantage of poor defensive work by Accra Lions to head in the Phobians’ third goal on the 82nd minute mark.
Hearts of Oak could have extended the lead to 4-2 but a well taken short by Martin Karikari rattled the cross bar and ricocheted off Lions’ goalkeeper for a corner kick in favour of the Phobians. Hearts of Oak ran away with all three points and now have 25 points from 15 matches played.
