Ghana Premier League: Medeama and Kotoko lose, Hearts of Oak held

Week 25 from the Ghana Premier League came alive over the weekend with leaders Medeama and Asante Kotoko recording losses and Hearts of Oak selling out a goalless draw at home to Holy Stars on Sunday.

The first twenty minutes of the game between Hearts and Holy Stars saw the Phobians dominate ball possession but they could not turn that advantage into goals.

Holy Stars came close to finding the opener however Gideon Quaison’s thundering left-footed free kick was kneed over the bar by Hearts keeper Benjamin Asare in the 31st minute mark.

A decent move by Hearts of Oak positioned Emmanuel Amankwah to power home the opener however his volley ricocheted off Holy Stars backline for a corner which was eventually wasted.

Hearts returned for the second half with quick attacks on the flanks, however efforts from youngster Henry Boateng and Mawuli Wayo did not cause havoc for the Holy Stars defense.

Hamza Issah was set up by Henry Boateng moments later, but his poor volley failed to put Hearts of Oak ahead in the 58 minutes.

Holy Stars managed to hold their guns and picked a point after the referee blew his whistle for the end of the proceedings.

League leaders Medeama SC gave away a goal advantage to lose 2-1 against strugglers Hohoe United at the Tarkwa TnA Park but despite the loss, they stay top of the table on 46 points, one above reigning champions GoldStars who lost 3-1 at Young Apostles.

At the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale, the only goal by Malik Abubakar gave Karela United a 1-0 victory over record holders Asante Kotoko on Sunday.

The win sent Karela into 6th on the Ghana Premier League table with 38 points while Asante Kotoko dropped into 5th on 39 points from 25 league matches.
