The Technical Advisor of the Ghana Football Association, Winfried Schafer has shared his thoughts on the nation’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco later this year.

Ghana after six games during the qualifiers, recorded three draws and suffered three defeats, finishing bottom of group F with three points.

The veteran German tactician, who won the Africa Cup of Nations trophy with Cameroon in 2000, was appointed to change Ghana’s affairs for the two 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagsacar in March.

The Black Stars defeated Chad 5-0 in Accra before dispatching Madagascar by 3-0 in Morocco to top Group I on 15 points.

The four-time African champions will not be at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations for first time in over two decades which Schafer talks about the debacle and why he was brought in by the Ghana Football Association to turn things around.

“The team had missed the Africa Cup something considered a catastrophe in Ghana,” he told Sachsische Zeitung.

“There was unrest in the squad, World Cup qualification wasn’t going well, and the president of the federation asked me to come in and bring some structure," he added.

The team will regroup for a four-nation tournament in the UK later this month before taking on Chad and Mali in the Matchday 7 and 8 games of the World Cup qualifiers in September.
