Petro de Luanda are perfect through two matches as Angola’s top flight Girabola proceeded with its third round over the weekend. Os Tricolores returned to domestic league action on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over last season’s runners-up, Wiliete SC.
Former Honduras national team attacker Jonathan Rubio Toro opened the scoring for the Angolan champions, who gained a measure of revenge after Wiliete dealt them one of their two defeats last season during Petro’s successful title defense. Petro maintained their lead thanks to strong goalkeeping from veteran leader Hugo Marques.
Another foreign star, Portuguese attacker Pedro Aparicio, doubled Petro’s advantage early in the second half to mark a successful return from continental duty. Petro advanced to the final round of qualifying for the CAF Champions League with a 6-0 aggregate victory over Mauritian club Cercle de Joachim.
Petro have a game in hand on CRD Libolo, who currently sit at the top of the table on seven points from three matches. The leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by CD Lunda Sul, leaving the door open for Petro as well as CAF Confederation Cup participants Kabuscorp and Primeiro de Agosto to catch up and overtake.
