Given Msimango: Three reasons why TS Galaxy clash is personal

Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango is approaching Sunday’s Betway Premiership encounter against TS Galaxy with a heightened sense of anticipation, fuelled by a mixture of sentiment, personal redemption, and club ambitions.

The 28-year-old centre-back has identified three key drivers behind his focus for the clash at FNB Stadium: his history as a former Rockets captain, his gruelling comeback from a year-long injury nightmare, and Amakhosi’s desperate push for CAF inter-club qualification.

BATTLE AGAINST ‘INJURY DEMONS’ FOR CHIEFS’ GIVEN MSIMANGO

For Given Msimango, simply being on the pitch is a victory. The defender has spent the better part of a year sidelined by a recurring groin issue that derailed his progress after joining the Glamour Boys in 2023.

“My injury lay-off was a very difficult period for me,” Msimango told the club’s website. “It started around April last year. I battled with a groin injury for six or seven months. As soon as I recovered, I played a few games and broke down again against Zamalek in a very important match. It was frustrating, but I’ve been through rehabilitation, and I’m ready.”

He credited his mental resilience and the support of the Chiefs management for helping him navigate the “ordeal” to regain full fitness.

A POINT TO PROVE AGAINST FORMER EMPLOYERS

Having captained TS Galaxy during a successful three-year stint, Msimango admits that facing his former side remains an emotional highlight on the calendar.

“They hold a place in my heart; I was given a platform there to show what I can do,” he explained. “It’s a challenge for me personally because I have to prove my ability against quality opposition that believes in a specific philosophy.”

PLUGGING THE GAP IN THE REARGUARD

Given Msimango’s return comes at a critical time for the Soweto giants, who are looking to consolidate their position in the top three. After an assured performance in a recent 3-1 win over Orbit College, the defender is eager to stabilise a backline that has been hit by absences.

“It was great to get a feel for playing again. It took a bit of adjusting, but I am happy with the first step. I’m looking to build on that going into the Galaxy game.”

However, he warned that The Rockets—boasting the likes of Victor Letsoalo and the pacey Selukelo Mahlambi—will be a stern test for the Amakhosi defense. “They don’t leak a lot of goals and play a varied game. We are not underestimating them at all.”
