On loan in the second division of Ukraine with FC Metalist 1925, Zambia national team defender Golden Mafwenta provided an assist to help his team to a 1-0 first leg victory on Thursday over Livyi Bereg in the Ukrainian Premier League's promotion/relegation playoff.
Playing in central midfield, Mafwenta received a bit of good fortune to assist the only goal of the match scored by Ari Moura in the 38th minute. The Livyi Bereg defense failed to clear a cross and Mafwenta crashed in to attempt a volley and his miskick fell right to Moura who curled in a beautiful finish.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday for the second leg at the home of Metalist who are bidding to return to the Ukrainian Premier League after being relegated last season. Metalist finished third in the second tier First League, qualifying them for a playoff against Livyi Bereg who finished 14th in the 16-team league.
Mafwenta is on loan at the club from MFK Vyskov after spending two seasons with the Czech club. The 24-year-old previously went on loan to the reserve team of Major League Soccer club Real Salt Lake in the United States after joining Vyskov from Zambian giants Zanaco.
The versatile defensive player last played for Zambia in November, making two substitute appearances as Chipolopolo concluded a successful qualification campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. He has eight appearances for Zambia.
