Gor Mahia coach Akonnor not impressed despite Sofapaka win

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor admitted he was impressed with the team’s potential despite defeating Sofapaka 3-0 in an FKF Premier League fixture at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

First half goals from Ebenezer Adukwaw, Sylvester Owino and Frank Odhiambo were enough to hand K’Ogalo their 12th victory of the campaign and give them a four-point lead at the summit ahead of their rivals AFC Leopards.

Gor Mahia created chances but not able to score

“What was not so good is what we did in the second half. We created a lot of chances, but we must be ambitious. It doesn’t matter that we scored three, when we create chances, we must score more. But we can only be proud of the boys,” said Akonnor as quoted by Gor Mahia website.

“We were tactically very sound. We played the game at ease, and all the things that we wanted to do, we did in the first half. We were a bit superior to the opponent.”

He added: “After about 20 minutes of the second half, we thought of managing the game, so we brought in fresh legs. We still created chances. It was unfortunate for Assifuah, he made a lot of attempts and showed his qualities, he was just unlucky not to score.”

Discussing his defenders, who scored in the game, the Ghanaian legend said: “It’s really exciting because this week we trained a lot on that and we encouraged them to go in and try to score. I am also very happy for Frank who for his first time he scored.

“He’s very good… I mean the team has gotten the momentum and we are moving forward which is very good.”

On the title race, Akonnor was composed and calm. He responded: “It is not over until it’s over and we have AFC who are also trying their best to push us.

“It’s a very good competition and I personally like it, but what is important is that we are focused, we maintain the level in which we are, we maintain the position and we’ll see at the end of the season what happens.”

The record Kenyan champions will next face promoted side APS Bomet in a mid-week fixture on Tuesday.
