Gor Mahia move ten points clear after Shabana win

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia stretched their lead at the FKF Premier League table to 10 points following their 1-0 victory against Shabana FC at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The victory against Shabana came after K’Ogalo had dismantled Ulinzi Stars 3-1. Gor Mahia are now on course to reclaim the FKF Premier League from champions Kenya Police FC.

Against Shabana, Gor Mahia needed goals from Alpha Onyango, and Jackson Dwang to collect maximum points in front of their fans. Gor Mahia controlled the game from the first whistle with Enock Morisson being the main man in the middle of play.

Gor Mahia started the best side

With only 10 minutes played, Gor Mahia created the first opportunity when the overlapping Paul Ochuonga set up Morrison, but the Ghanaian import sent his effort wide.

Shabana’s best chance came five minutes later but Kevin Omundi’s weak shot was saved by Gad Mathews. Gor Mahia continued to pressure Shabana and they came close when Samuel Kapen saw his effort from outside the area go inches wide.

However, Gor Mahia took the lead in the 23rd minute when Dwang used his physical power to evade three Shabana defenders before planting the ball into the net.

Gor Mahia could only celebrate for two minutes as Shabana drew level. A defensive mix-up between goalkeeper Mathews and defender Bryton Onyona, allowed Wycliffe Omondi to head home.

Gor Mahia’s win underlined their seriousness

The game remained tied 1-1 at the half-time break. Ebenezer Adukwaw should have restored Gor Mahia’s lead from close range but his effort rattled the woodwork for a goal-kick.

With the game headed for a 1-1 draw, Gor Mahia scored what turned out to be the winner courtesy of Onyango. A corner delivered by Dwang found Onyango unmarked at the far post, and he headed home to break Shabana hearts.

The win underlined Gor Mahia’s resilience and reinforced their command at the summit as they continue to pile pressure on the chasing pack in the title race.
