After Gor Mahia issued a statement to confirm the unavailability to host their FKF Premier League Mashemeji derby against AFC Leopards as scheduled for Sunday, November 30, the Kenyan record champions have confirmed a new date for the eagerly awaited clash.
In an earlier statement seen by Pan-Africa Football, Gor Mahia wrote to FKF confirming that the derby will not be played as planned because of lack of a venue.
“Gor Mahia is unable to secure a suitable venue for the fixture” and is therefore requesting that the derby be postponed to a later date to be communicated by FKF,” read part of the letter written and signed by the club’s Secretary General Nicanor Arum and addressed to FKF Leagues and Competitions Manager Frank Ogolla.
“Gor Mahia has expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the request and assured FKF of the club’s commitment to ensuring the derby proceeds smoothly once a new date is confirmed.
“We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause and assure you of our commitment to ensuring that the match proceeds smoothly once the new date is confirmed.”
Hours after the statement, Gor Mahia came out to confirm the 98th Mashemeji derby will now be played on Sunday, December 7 at Nyayo Stadium.
Kasarani became unavailable for November 30 since Nairobi United will use the venue for their CAF Confederation Cup matchday two against DR Congo’s AS Maniema FC. Meanwhile, Nyayo Stadium was booked for a government function.
Gor Mahia will head to the derby following their 4-1 humiliating defeat against relegation-threatened APS Bomet. While Gor Mahia sit top of the 18-team league table with 19 points, AFC Leopards are fourth with 14 points.
