Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League champions Gor Mahia have conceded they are not in the race for the title following their 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards in a Mashemeji derby fixture at Raila Stadium in Homabay County on Monday.

The record Kenyan champions needed a straight win to keep alive their hopes of winning a third consecutive title, but they could only manage a draw after Austin Odhiambo scored their opener before Brian Wanyama levelled matters for Ingwe.

Speaking after the game, interim coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno admitted that they have abandoned their ambitions to win the Premier League, and shifted focus to the domestic FKF Cup, where they are in the final and will face Nairobi United.

“I don’t think there is any other chance (to win the league),” said the former defender. “As you can see, the gap is widening between us and Kenya Police, and now we cannot talk about the league anymore.”

On Gor Mahia’s overall display against AFC Leopards, he said: “I think lack of concentration in defense cost us. Our previous game we conceded from a throw-in, and today again from a set-piece.

“It’s a concern that we can work on going forward but I’m very disappointed because this is a match we planned on how to win.”

So far in the league, K’Ogalo are sitting second on the table with 55 points, six points behind leaders Kenya Police with two matches left to end the season.
