Gor Mahia floor Sofapaka to bounce back, Tusker FC lose again

Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia registered their first victory of the season after defeating Sofapaka 2-0 in an FKF Premier League fixture at Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

The record Kenyan champions went into the fixture smarting from a shock 1-0 defeat against bogey side Bidco United while Sofapaka had kicked off their campaign with a 1-1 draw against AFC Leopards.

Ghanaian import Ebenezer Adukwa scored the opening goal for Gor Mahia after capitalising on a defensive mistake. Gor Mahia were awarded another opportunity to stretch their lead from the penalty spot in the 38th minute.

However, Harambee Stars midfielder Austin Odhiambo watched helplessly as his effort was superbly saved by Batoto ba Mungu custodian Victor Kamungo. Odhiambo had been fouled by Vinedine Ambesa inside the box, and he stepped up to take the penalty which he missed.

Tusker suffer second defeat in a row

Gor Mahia’s second half, looked even better than the first with Odhiambo leading from the midfield. However, despite their dominance, Sofapaka were not willing to crumble.

But in the 55th minute, K’Ogalo doubled their lead when Adukwa notched his second of the day, after he spotted Kamungo off his line, to lob the ball into an empty net.

Meanwhile, Tusker’s poor start to the new season continued after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Posta Rangers. Despite taking an early lead courtesy of Eric Kapaito, the mailmen turned the game on its head to take home maximum points.

The Brewers have now lost two matches in a row, having suffered a 2-0 defeat against KCB in their opening fixture. Elsewhere, KCB’s unbeaten start came to an end after losing 2-1 against Mathare United. In Migori, hosts Mara Sugar and Kakamega Homeboyz both got off their league campaign on a tied outcome in a barren draw.
