Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia continued with their fine start to the FKF Premier League season after defeating Mathare United 2-0 in a fixture played at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday.
Since losing their season opener 1-0 against Bidco United, the record Kenyan champions have turned their season around with four straight wins. After Bidco, they defeated Sofapaka 2-0, KCB 1-0, Posta Rangers 3-0 and now Mathare United 1-0.
Against the ‘Slum Boys’, Gor Mahia controlled proceedings from the onset with midfielder Shariff Musa causing a lot of problems for Mathare United, who had won their last league game 1-0 away to Shabana FC.
However, it was Mathare, who hit the back of the net first, when Brian Ouru’s deflected effort went in, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw despite K’Ogalo’s dominance.
At the start of the second period, Gor Mahia broke the deadlock. Paul Ochuoga delivered a perfect cross into Mathare’s danger zone, and Musa reacted fast to slot it home. Substitute Bryson Wangai sealed the victory in the stoppages.
Gor Mahia’s Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor praised the team for another win promising to keep the momentum. “We want to keep the winning momentum,” he said after the game.
“We have started to understand each other, and that is why we are on a good run, but we can only do better if we manage to continue winning our matches.”
The win saw Gor Mahia jump to second on the 18-team league table with 12 points, one fewer than leaders Kakamega Homeboyz. Gor Mahia will return to action against struggling Ulinzi Stars at the same venue on Saturday.
