Gor Mahia star Alpha Onyango reveals future hope after CHAN success

Gor Mahia midfielder Alpha Onyango has discussed what he wants to achieve in the future following his superb displays for Kenya national team Harambee Stars during the just-concluded TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in East Africa.

Onyango, who won two man of the match awards, was among the trusted players for coach Benni McCarthy as Kenya reached the knockout stages of CHAN before losing to Madagascar.

Asked what he wants to achieve in the future Onyango said: “I am committed to Gor Mahia and still on a contract with them, but I do not know what the future holds. It is all about taking it a step at a time.”

He added: “I wanted to one day play in La Liga or EPL, and I think if I ever get there, then my dream will have been really fulfilled. Playing in Europe, competing with and against the very best, that would crown everything I’ve been working towards.”

On featuring in the CHAN for the first time, Onyango explained: “It was a fantastic feeling considering it was the first time we were taking part in this tournament, so to be named man of the match was a proud moment for myself.

“Being named man of the match twice was an honor considering it was the first time we were playing in the tournament. It will hold long in my memory I think for the rest of my life.”

Kenya will now shift focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers where they are scheduled to face Gambia and Seychelles in September.
