Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia returned to winning ways following a hard-fought 1-0 win against Kakamega Homeboyz at Kasarani Stadium on Wednesday.
Since losing to promoted side APS Bomet, Gor Mahia had gone for two straight matches without registering victory. The shocking 4-1 defeat against APS Bomet was followed by a 1-0 FKF Premier League Mashemeji derby defeat against rivals AFC Leopards.
Gor Mahia then travelled to Mombasa where they had to come from behind to secure a 1-1 draw against struggling Bandari FC. The Homeboyz game was a must win for Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor, who faced criticism from the fans after the draw against the Dockers.
However, Gor Mahia needed a 19th minute goal courtesy of midfielder Alpha Onyango to defeat Homeboyz and claim maximum points. Onyango, who started the fixture as the captain following the benching of Austin Odhiambo, beat Homeboyz keeper Simon Masaka with a superb effort.
The win enabled Gor Mahia to open a two point lead at the summit of the 18-team Premier League table with 23 points from 12 matches. Gor Mahia have managed seven wins, two draws, and lost three.
Meanwhile, Homeboyz, who went into the game sitting second, dropped up to sixth with 20 points from 13 matches, They have managed five wins, five draws, and lost three times.
The second position is occupied by KCB, who secured a 4-2 victory against APS Bomet on Tuesday. The Bankers have garnered 21 points accumulated from six wins, three draws, and four defeats.
Elsewhere, Tusker FC’s three match winning run came to an end after suffering a 1-0 defeat against promoted side Nairobi United. The Brewers went into the game having won their last three matches.
The last defeat for Tusker was against Gor Mahia on November 22, but they recovered to beat Mara Sugar 1-0, Ulinzi Stars 1-0 and Sofapaka 2-0. However, United put breaks to the good run.
Tusker goalkeeper Brandon Obiero’s error handed them a 1-0 win at St. Sebastian Park in Murang’a.
A feeble shot from Kelvin Otiende evaded Obiero and into the net, handing United their fifth win of the season while condemning Tusker to their fifth defeat of the campaign.
