The Guinea national team hopes to return to the Stade du 28 Septembre by the end of the year. Guinea is among the nations that were banned from playing at home by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for not meeting the minimum stadium criteria.
Built in 1964, the stadium was used by the Syli National for many decades. After CAF barred the national team from using the stadium, the Guinea Football Federation opted to play matches in Morocco and Ivory Coast.
Three Guinea top-flight clubs had used the stadium as their home since 1975. Nonetheless, after funds were secured from the government, the stadium was closed for over a year as it undergoes renovation.
According to Guineefoot, the stadium will be ready by the end of 2025. Guinea will host Algeria and Botswana in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifier Group G games elsewhere when qualifying resumes in September and October. According to reports, Ivory Coast is likely to be the preferred option.
