Mbenza during his time with Qatari club Muaither SC
Republic of Congo international striker Guy Mbenza brought his colorful personality and goal-scoring flair to China last year on Saturday, the former CAF Champions League winner made his first impact in the Chinese Super League by opening the scoring in Liaoning Tieren’s 3-0 victory over Tianjin Jinmen Tiger.
Chinese football aficionados have become very familiar with the flamboyant striker’s goal celebrations after his 28 goals in 27 matches led Liaoning to become champions of China’s League One last season. Now, he has opened his account in the Super League after staying with the club for their debut campaign in the top flight.
He opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on Saturday by getting on the end of a cross from the left flank. After an initial attempt at a volley was blocked, Mbenza pounced on the rebound to send the home support into pandemonium in Shenyang.
Ange Kouamé, Liaoning’s Ivorian-born Chinese Taipei international forward, doubled the lead in the second half before Takahiro Kunimoto’s penalty in stoppage time finished up the scoring.
It is Liaoning’s first victory in three matches since beginning their debut Super League season on March 7. Mbenza and his teammates were prevented from scoring in two defeats to begin the campaign before victory in their home opener on Saturday.
The 25-year-old moved to China after spending three years in the Gulf region with Saudi Pro League side Al Tai and Qatar’s Muaither SC. His opportunities in the Middle East came because of his exploits with Moroccan giants Wydad AC. Mbenza scored twenty goals during the 2021-22 campaign as Wydad won the CAF Champions League as well as Morocco’s top flight Botola Pro, where he was the top scorer.
After enduring relegation with Muaither to Qatar’s second tier, Mbenza elected to move to China not long after where he was a smashing success and led all scorers in League One.

Now, because of a massive corruption scandal in Chinese football, despite two defeats from three matches his club is in fourth place on three points. Over half of the Chinese Super League’s clubs were deducted points before the season began due to punishments handed down by the Chinese Football Federation with Liaoning not one of the clubs affected.
