The midfielder was courted by several clubs across Europe following his commanding performances for Strasbourg over the past three seasons. The 21-year-old was close to joining Leeds United but negotiations stalled a few days ago. Spanish La Liga side Atlético Madrid also showed interest but according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Sunderland is now expected to sign Diarra in a deal worth €35.5 million.
Sunderland is returning to the Premier League after a tumultuous eight years. Head coach Régis Le Bris is familiar with Diarra from his time in France with Lorient. Diarra is expected to bring new energy and tactical dynamism to the heart of Sunderland’s midfield.
Diarra represented France at various youth levels but made his senior debut for Senegal in 2024.
