Haris Belkebla named new Angers captain

Haris Belkebla has been appointed as the new captain of French Ligue 1 side Angers. The Algerian midfielder has played for Angers for one season after a spell in Saudi Arabia. He takes over from former captain Pierrick Capelle.

Belkebla’s leadership qualities are appreciated by head coach Alexandre Dujeux. Dujeux said Belkebla is the right choice to take the captain’s armband ahead of the new league season:

“Haris is a natural leader on and off the pitch thanks to his rigor, his exemplary daily behavior, and his commitment. He unites, brings people together, and is listened to by everyone in the locker room.”

The 31-year-old midfielder, for his part, stated he is proud to be chosen as the new captain of Angers:

“It’s an honor for me. I am happy, and I will do everything to live up to it and lift the group up.”

Belkebla was initially part of Algeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations–winning squad but was dropped after the tournament kicked off due to indiscipline. He has vast experience playing in Ligue 1 with clubs like Brest and Angers. He also had a spell with Tours.

Angers will begin their Ligue 1 campaign against newly promoted side Paris FC on Sunday, August 17.
