Heart of Lions’ dream of winning the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League title has been dashed following strings of poor performances in the last 13 league matches.
The Kpando-based club have sunk very low into mid-table after managing just five victories in their last 15 matches, recording a total of eight wins, six draws and nine losses in 23 matches.
Former Ghana international and goalkeepers’ trainer of the club, Stephen Ahorlu explained the reasons for the club’s unimpressive output lately
“Nothing has really happened to us just that our away performance has dropped, that is why we are facing challenges,” Stephen Ahorlu told Radio Gold.
“We have spoken to the players but most of the players deviate from what they have been told so we have to consistently speak to them so we speak to them every week to psyche them up.
“So we hope they will listen and act based on the technical team’s instructions because it’s not for only one match but for all the matches.
Stephen Ahorlu has admitted that Heart of Lions are no longer in the race for the league title but must now fight to avoid dropping into the relegation zone.
“To take the title this year will be difficult for us so for now we need to maintain our current position or we strive to move up a bit but to go down again will be detrimental because we will sink into the relegation zone. So we have to work hard and come up [the league ladder] a bit.”
Heart of Lions shocking gave away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 at home to reigning champions Bibiani GoldStars in week 22, a result that drew displeasure among the fans.
The club currently sit in 8th on the Ghana Premier League table on 30 points, four points above the relegation zone and they will next travel to Basake as guests of Holy Stars in match week 24 on Sunday, March 1.
