“Hearts of Oak need time to achieve lost glory” – Polo

Hearts of Oak legend, Mohammed Ahmed “Polo” has indicated that, the club needs time to regain its lost glory on the domestic and continental front.

The 2000 CAF Champions League winners gave away a goal to lose 2-1 to rivals, Asante Kotoko in the 2025 President’s Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday July 6.

The Phobians managed to finish fourth last season with 58 points, level with rivals Asante Kotoko after 34 league matches. Polo, who coached the club on tow occasions after retiring from the game says, the 2001 CAF Super Cup winners need administrative restructuring to regain its big name status.

“Not now, they don’t have the guts, they don’t have the people to take them there. They don’t even have the management to do that, they don’t,” Mohammed Polo told Radio Gold.

“Because they have not respected the people who have done it before for them to get the blessing to the next stage because we had wanted continuity to get to the next stage. “They say they won’t recognize what we have done and if you don’t recognize us you will be wondering. Hearts will not get anywhere with such shambolic management and players in the system.”

Hearts of Oak last participated in the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2021-22 season where they exited in the knockout phase – suffering a 4-2 aggregate loss to JS Saoura of Algeria over two legs.

The 2000 CAF Champions League winners have been quite uninspiring in the past three season. Hearts of Oak are the only Ghanaian club to have won all continental competitions – the CAF Champions League in 2000, the Super Cup in 2001 and the Confederation Cup in its maiden edition in 2004.

The record Ghana FA Cup holders will turn attention to the Eko International Cup in Nigeria.
