2024 Women’s Africa Cup Of Nations (WAFCON) hosts Morocco secured their first win at the finals on Wednesday following a 4-2 victory over DR Congo at the Olympic Stadium, Rabat.
Morocco trailed early in the game as Merveille Kanjinga gave DR Congo the lead just 6 minutes into the second group A encounter. But Ghizlane Chebbak, who scored the first hat-trick of the tournament, restored level terms for the Atlas Lionesses in the 25th minute before putting them in front in the 43rd minute.
The second half witnessed end-to-end action from both sides with DR Congo getting the equalizer in the 70th minute through Flavine Mawete.
However, Les Léopards Dames fell victim to a late push by the hosts when Chebbak completed her hat-trick in the 75th minute.
The North African side sealed their first victory when Yasmin Mrabet slotted home from the penalty spot for the fourth and final goal of the match in the 83rd minute.
The victory sees the hosts move to the top of Group A with four points. the same as second place Zambia who have a lower goal difference. Meanwhile DR Congo, who registered their first goal of the tournament in the encounter, are seated in last position after losing both games so far.
Morocco will face Senegal on the final day of Group A action on Saturday while DR Congo need nothing less than a victory when they face Zambia.
