The Soweto giants are currently locked in a relentless pursuit of Mamelodi Sundowns, who have held a vice-grip on the league title for the past eight seasons. Following a ruthless 5-0 demolition of Golden Arrows on Tuesday, the Buccaneers have not only boosted their confidence but also significantly improved their goal difference—a factor that could prove decisive in this narrow title race.
Pirates currently sit second on the log with 54 points from 23 matches, trailing Masandawana by a mere two points. With Sundowns away on continental duty—facing Esperance de Tunis in the CAF Champions League semi-finals this Sunday—Pirates have a golden opportunity to leapfrog their rivals and claim the summit of the table.
The Sea Robbers head into the clash in scorching form, having netted 11 goals in their last two outings. However, Ncikazi is wary of the unique challenges posed by the trip to the Natal Rich Boys.
“It’s unfamiliar territory; I don’t think we have ever played a game there [Umhlathuze Sports Complex], but that is not important,” Ncikazi told Pirates media. “Whatever the field, as long as there is a piece of land, we are prepared to go there and give it our best shot through proper preparation, recovery, and analysis.”
The former Golden Arrows mentor was blunt about the expectations placed on the squad as they enter the business end of the season.
“We must go to Umhlathuze and get three points. At Orlando Pirates, that is your responsibility and mandate—nothing less,” he added.
A victory tonight would see Pirates move to 57 points, one point clear of Sundowns, albeit having played an extra game. For the Buccaneers, the psychological advantage of sitting top of the pile could be massive as the season enters its final seven fixtures.
Richards Bay, however, will be no pushovers as they continue their own battle for stability in the top flight, making tonight’s clash a “must-watch” for both ends of the table.
