Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has explained why Congolese forward Yoane Wissa is not ready for more regular Premier League action.
Ahead of Newcastle United’s match against Burnley FC on Tuesday, Howe explained why he has been featuring the former Brentford FC forntman sparingly.
The African scored for Newcastle in his first Premier League start for his new employers as the Magpies beat the Clarets 3-1. He played for 80 minutes before being replaced by Nick Woltemade.
“With Yoane, I think we’ve got to look after him,” Howe told Newcastle’s website.
“He’s still relatively early in his return to full fitness. He did really well in his one start, against Fulham – I was really pleased with him on that day, and there’ll be other opportunities.
“The problem for us is, with our schedule, playing every three, four days, I don’t think he’s in a condition where he could start regularly at the moment. But hopefully we can manage him to that point at some stage.”
Wissa scored for the first time for Newcastle United on his full debut in the 2-1 victory over Fulham FC in a Carabao Cup semi-final on December 18.
The Congolese striker joined Newcastle United from Brentford United where he formed a deadly strike force with Cameronian Bryan Mbeumo who moved to Manchester United.
