Hunts looks at bigger picture after Stellenbosch FC draw

Durban City FC’s coach Gavin Hunt has painted a picture of progress from their goalless draw against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday. He said this despite now going two consecutive games without a win in the elite league for South Africa.

The Betway Premiership rookies went into the match at the Danie Craven Stadium seeking to bounce back from the previous week’s 3-1 loss to defending champions and record winners Mamelodi Sundowns.

In a post-match interview with his team’s media, Hunt chose to look at the larger picture from the game against the struggling Stellenbosch.

“I thought we did okay… we had a couple of good moments,” he said. “The last fifteen minutes was tough… they threw the kitchen sink at us.”

The former SuperSport United handler further acknowledged his squad’s resilience and discipline that enabled them to fetch a point from the desperate opponents.

“It bears well for what’s coming ahead. We just got to try and box clever… try and get ourselves out of here unscathed a little bit and then move on,” Hunt explained.

The former Kaizer Chiefs boss also highlighted the need to give newly recruited players time to gel with the rest of the squad.

“I’m trying to be consistent with the selection which I always think is important when you get a new team in the league. A game like this, this is pure heart and guts and thunder,” he added.

The result sees City sitting in sixth place on the log with 12 points earned from eight games while Steve Barker’s men occupy third place from the basement with a mere five points from eight games comprising one win and two draws.

What next for Durban City and Stellenbosch FC?

The next assignment for Hunt and his men will be against struggling Magesi FC at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday. John Maduka’s men lost 1-0 to Richards Bay 1-0 just when the previous week’s 2-0 victory over Siwelele FC seemed to have turned around their fortunes.

In the other camp, Stellenbosch return to the battlefront as they hunt for more points with a meeting against fellow strugglers Chippa United on Sunday.
