Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye has reflected on his season at club side, Villarreal, stating that he feels “more mature and fulfilled.”
The 26-year-old is in the form of his life at La Liga club where he has made 30 appearances, scoring two goals this season under Spanish boss, Marcelino García Toral.
In an open interview captured by Wiwsport, Gueye reflected on his development and growth, adaptation in Spain and commitment to both club and country.
“I feel very good, both physically and mentally. We’re in an important moment with the club, and we’re all very focused on achieving our goals.”
The former Le Havre defensive midfielder joined Villarreal from Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Marseille and he spoke about the challenge of adapting to various roles on the pitch.
“It’s true that I’ve even played some matches as a false nine,” he laughed. “But I enjoy it. I want to learn and grow. Whether I play in midfield or on the left, I take it as a plus.”
Surrounded by fellow African players at the club, Gueye says the friendship and shared language have played a key role in his transition and integration from France to Spain.
“We speak French, and that helps with integration. I also speak Spanish, so I can help those who don’t. We help each other and feel better on the pitch because of it.
“Here, even the teams at the bottom play out from the back with the goalkeeper. Technically, I’ve learned a lot, especially in positional play with Marcelino. I’ve progressed a lot in that regard.”
Born in France, Gueye decided to represent the Teranga Lions at the senior level. When asked about choosing Senegal over France he said: “I asked myself a lot of questions. I wanted to become someone in my country. I’m attached to my culture, and my parents are very proud. It’s a dream to play for Senegal.”
Gueye’s club career included stints at Le Havre before a botched transfer to then English Premier League club, Watford. A move to Olympique Marseille revived his career before a loan spell at Sevilla. He joined Villarreal from Marseille in 2024.
