Monnapule Saleng has provided an honest reflection on his long-awaited Mamelodi Sundowns debut, admitting that his immediate impact against Sekhukhune United is just a glimpse of what he intends to bring to Chloorkop.
The explosive winger, who made a high-profile cross-town switch from Orlando Pirates in January following a loan spell at Orbit College, finally took to the Loftus Versfeld Stadium turf on Sunday. His arrival at the club was initially hampered by a nagging thigh injury, but after weeks of rehabilitation, coach Miguel Cardoso unleashed the Bafana Bafana international with 10 minutes remaining and the game deadlocked at 1-1.
Saleng’s impact was instantaneous. Within sixty seconds of replacing Tashreeq Matthews, the wideman turned provider, teeing up fellow substitute Iqraam Rayners to restore the lead before playing a pivotal role in the build-up to Rayners’ second of the afternoon.
Reflecting on his maiden appearance in the yellow and blue, Saleng was quick to deflect praise toward the technical team and the club’s leadership.
“Let me say thanks to the technical team, the coaches, and also the players. The progression has been good since I started training, and I appreciate the coach for giving me the opportunity to play,” Saleng remarked.
The 2022/23 PSL Players’ Player of the Season noted that the warm reception from the Masandawana faithful helped ease the pressure of his debut.
“It made me feel welcomed. It’s been a while since the fans have seen me play. I was happy, and I appreciate the reception from the supporters. I’d also like to thank the captain, Themba Zwane, and all the players for encouraging me. They have been motivating me constantly at training.”
For Saleng, the move to Chloorkop is about more than just personal accolades; it’s about aligning with the club’s relentless pursuit of silverware.
“I just want to continue winning. That’s the only thing I want us to do, and that’s the most important thing. It feels good for me because this is a team that always strives to win,” he added.
“I’m happy to be able to contribute to the goals that were scored. It shows that I also have something to offer this team going forward.”
