Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan says he wished he could play against Uruguay once again, recollecting the painful 2010 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal exit at the finals in South Africa.
Ghana's all-time leading top scorer revealed that his most emotional moment on the pitch was when the final whistle went against the South Americans in their 2010 World Cup quarterfinal match.
The Black Stars were on the verge of a historic semifinal berth but Gyan's penalty miss in the quarter-final sent the game into penalty shootouts. The four time African champions missed out on their first-ever semifinal appearance after the shootout defeat sent the West African nation into total despondency.
Gyan, 39, who is Africa’s top scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals said: "If I could play one more game, it would be against Uruguay. My most emotional moment on the pitch was when the final whistle went against Uruguay. Not when I missed the penalty, after the penalty shootout," he added.
Gyan ended his international career in 2019 with 51 goals for Ghana and called time on his illustrious career spanning two decades in 2023, winning numerous individual and team honors.
Gyan cut his professional teeth with now defunct Liberty Professionals in Accra before stints with Serie A sides Udinese and Modena. He has played for Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Shabab Al Ahli, Kayserispor and North East United of India before concluding his career with Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities.
