Irvin Khoza breaks down Pirates’ historic Adidas deal extension

Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has described the club’s relationship with global sportswear giant adidas as a partnership that “transcends that of a traditional sponsor,” as the Buccaneers announced a massive five-year contract extension on Thursday.

Dr Irvin Khoza, who is also the PSL boss, stood at the centre of the landmark announcement, which sees the Betway Premiership leaders solidify one of the most enduring alliances in African sports history. The renewal is particularly significant as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the partnership, which first began in 1996.

“Reaching 30 years together is a rare achievement in world sport,” Dr Irvin Khoza stated. “This renewal reflects our confidence in continuing this journey side by side.

“It is a partnership built on mutual trust, shared values, and a collective ambition to grow the Orlando Pirates brand beyond borders,” added Irvin Khoza.

A Milestone Deal for Irvin Khoza and Pirates

The five-year extension ensures that the German manufacturer will continue to provide world-class performance apparel and pioneering kit designs for the first team, technical staff, and management until at least 2031.

According to a club statement, the decision followed “extensive and considered deliberations” between both organisations. The focus of the new deal is not just limited to the pitch, but aims to deepen collaboration across several key areas:

High-performance wear: Utilising cutting-edge innovation for the athletes.

Retail expansion: Growing the footprint of the Pirates brand locally and internationally.

Lifestyle collections: Creating merchandise that celebrates the rich heritage and culture of the club.

Supporter engagement: Strengthening the bond with the generations of fans who wear the skull and crossbones.

Bucs’ Stamenet on the Adidas Deal

“Orlando Pirates Football Club is proud to announce the renewal of its long-standing partnership with global sportswear leader adidas for a further five years, extending one of the most iconic and enduring relationships in African football,” reads the club statement.

“Following extensive and considered deliberations between both organisations, the renewed agreement reinforces a shared commitment to performance excellence, innovation, and the continued growth of the Orlando Pirates brand on the global stage.

“First established in 1996, the collaboration between adidas and the Buccaneers has become synonymous with some of the most memorable moments in the Club’s modern history. The 2026 season marks the 30th anniversary of this partnership; a significant milestone that cements it as one of the longest-running technical sponsorships in South African sport.

“For three decades, adidas has played an integral role in the Club’s journey, providing world-class performance apparel, pioneering kit designs, and merchandise that resonate deeply with generations of supporters both locally and internationally.

“This renewed agreement ensures that Orlando Pirates players, technical staff, supporters and management will continue to benefit from adidas’ cutting-edge innovation, premium quality, and globally recognised design expertise.”
