Is Deborah Henry heir to Tabitha Chawinga’s throne?

Malawi senior women’s team captain Tabitha Chawinga watched from television a gem Deborah Henry star for the Scorchers on her debut in South Africa on Saturday.

The Silver Strikers Ladies forward scored a hat-trick for Malawi as they cruised to the 8-1 victory over Lesotho at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa.

In a reaction, the France-based skipper wrote on Facebook: “To see a player that was discovered at TC11 Investment Women Football Bonanza, step onto the national stage, score a hat trick on her debut and walk away with Player of the Match—that’s not luck.

“That’s vision, belief, and development. Proud is an understatement. Talent was always there; she just needed the platform.”

Context matters to Tabitha’s compliments.

Chawinga sisters and Malawi scoring issues

The Scorchers are never the same scoring-wise minus the Olympique Lyonnes Women star and her America-based younger sister Temwa. Often, there has been debate on whether the brilliance of the Chawinga’s masks the weakness of the Lovemore Fazili-led team.

The likes of Vanessa Chikupira, Sabina Thom and of late, Rose Kadzere and Faith Chinzimu, have always stepped up to the plate, making up for the absence of the deadly duo to steer Malawi to glory.

Chinzimu’s goals in the home 2-0 victory over Angola last October helped the Scorchers secure their maiden Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) berth.

However, for all their brilliance in other aspects of the game, Thom, Kadzere and Chinzimu are not consistent enough with the goals in the absence of the sisters.

How Deborah Henry stepped up to the plate

Henry seemed to have provided the answer on Saturday with the hattrick on her first appearance for Malawi.

For the Silver Strikers Ladies rising star, it wasn’t about just the scoring. It was also about her execution and the variety of it. The first goal was from a tap in. The second goal was about timing her run to perfection. Her last strike was all about using her brain and brilliance.

These are the attributes that the Chawinga sisters bring into Malawi matches. Little wonder, Tabitha acknowledged the brilliance of Henry.

Henry has been in inspired form for Silver Strikers Ladies, winning the 2025 Golden Boot as she inspired her Lilongwe-based club to the National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Women’s Premiership title.

Is she perhaps the chosen one to Tabitha’s lofty throne?

The Deborah Henry COSAFA debut will go down as one of the most exciting breakthrough performances in recent Malawi women’s football history. While Malawi captain Tabitha Chawinga watched from France, a new attacking star announced herself in emphatic fashion.

Henry scored a stunning hat-trick as Malawi’s Scorchers cruised to an 8-1 victory over Lesotho at the COSAFA Women’s Championship in South Africa. It was not just the scoreline that impressed—it was the authority and maturity of her performance on her senior international debut.

She walked away with Player of the Match honors, and more importantly, sparked renewed belief that Malawi’s future in attack may be secure.

Tabitha Chawinga’s Praise Carries Weight

Following the match, Tabitha Chawinga—who stars for Olympique Lyonnais Féminin—shared a heartfelt message praising Henry’s journey. She reminded fans that the striker was first discovered through the TC11 Investment Women Football Bonanza, a development initiative designed to unearth young talent.

Her message emphasized that Henry’s success was built on vision, belief, and structured development—not luck.

That endorsement is significant given Malawi’s long-standing reliance on Tabitha and her younger sister Temwa Chawinga for goals. Whenever the Chawinga sisters are absent, concerns over scoring depth inevitably surface.

Life Beyond the Chawinga Sisters

Under coach Lovemore Fazili, the Scorchers have achieved notable progress, including qualification for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the first time in history.

Players such as Faith Chinzimu, Sabina Thom, and Rose Kadzere have stepped up in important moments. Chinzimu’s goals in the 2-0 victory over Angola last October secured that historic WAFCON berth.

However, consistency in front of goal has remained a concern when the Chawinga duo are unavailable. While the supporting cast offers technical quality and work rate, replicating the sisters’ clinical edge has proven difficult.

How Deborah Henry Delivered

Henry’s hat-trick was impressive not only in numbers but in variety.

  • First goal: A classic poacher’s finish, reacting quickest inside the box for a simple tap-in.

  • Second goal: A perfectly timed run that split the defense before a composed finish.

  • Third goal: Intelligence and creativity, using awareness and quick thinking to outmaneuver defenders and seal her treble.

These are the same qualities that define the Chawinga sisters—movement, timing, composure, and clinical execution. Henry mirrored those attributes with remarkable confidence for a debutant.

Domestic Form Backing International Promise

The performance did not come out of nowhere. Henry has been in outstanding form for Silver Strikers Ladies, winning the 2025 Golden Boot and guiding the Lilongwe-based side to the National Bank of Malawi Women’s Premiership title.

Her domestic consistency suggested she was ready for a bigger stage. On Saturday, she proved it.
