Mighty Wanderers midfielder Isaac Kaliyati won the 2024 Player of the Year Award while Ascent Soccer Academy’s Leticia Chinyamula was named Women’s Footballer of the Year during the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Awards held on Friday, February 21, 2025.
Kaliyati received the accolade for his stellar season when he won the TNM Super League Golden Boot Award with 17 goals playing as an attacking midfielder, leading Wanderers to a second-place finish and Castel Challenge Cup glory.
The Wanderers player was shortlisted for the award alongside FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker Babatunde Adepoju and Silver Strikers goalkeeper George Chikooka who finished in second and third place respectively.
Midfielder Chinyamula earned the recognition after guiding the Lilongwe-based club to the national championship to earn maiden participation in the COSAFA Club Championship which acted as the regional qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League. She beat team-mate Faith Chinzimu and Bullets FC’s Tendai Sani to the awards.
To cap it all, Ascent Soccer Academy coach Thom Mkolongo claimed the Women’s Coach of the Year Award at the expense of Bullets mentor Maggie Chombo and Linda Kasenda, Civil Service United team manager.
In the men's section, Peter Mponda shrugged off competition from Kalisto Pasuwa and Elijah Kananji to claim Coach of the Year gong after guiding Silver Strikers to the TNM Super League title for the first time in 11 years. Mponda has since joined childhood club FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
Other categories saw, Silver defender MacDonald Lameck named Young Player of the Year with Price Kumwembe getting a similar accolade for youth football. Godfrey Nkhakananga was named best referee and Lameck Phiri best assistant referee).
The awards combined recognitions for stand-out performers in Castel Challenge Cup and FDH Cup while the Super League coaches, captains and fans voted for the overall awards.
