Burkina Faso and former RS Berkane legend Issoufou Dayo joins Qatari club

After more than a decade with Moroccan champions RS Berkane, Burkina Faso national team defender Issoufou Dayo is off to Qatar where he joined top flight side Umm Salal on Tuesday.

The CAF Confederation Cup winner, who turned 34 years old last week, joins Umm Salal in the final stages of their preseason preparations for the upcoming Qatar Stars League campaign. The details of Dayo’s contract have not been revealed at this time for the player who also represented Congolese giants AS Vita Club.

Dayo joins after a legendary spell at Berkane, with whom he captured eight trophies including three CAF Confederation Cup conquests (2019-20, 2021-22 and 2024-25), three Moroccan Throne Cups (2017-18, 2020-21 and 2021-22), a CAF Super Cup (2022) and RSB’s first-ever Botola Pro league title this past season. He made 316 total appearances for Berkane, accumulating 49 goals and 10 assists. Dayo also has over 70 appearances for the Burkina Faso national team with 9 goals.

Fellow former Berkane player Adil Tahif has also joined Umm Salal, who are looking for substantial improvement after a poor 2024-25 season. The club escaped relegation by the narrowest of margins, defeating second tier side Al Markhiya in a relegation playoff where they required extra time in a 2-1 victory.

Tahif and Dayo featured as the central defense partnership for Berkane during their highly successful 2024-25 season, giving Umm Salal an instant upgrade. The club shipped 43 goals in 22 games last season and begins their season on August 15 at Al Gharafa.
