Simba SC midfielder Yusuph Kagoma has revealed his delight at seeing the Mainland Premier League giants stay at top of the table heading into the New Year.

The Wekundu wa Msimbazi were forced to dig deep on Saturday in their latest league fixture and edge out Singida Black Stars 1-0 at Litti Stadium in Singida. Congolese midfielder Fabrice Ngoma scored late in the first half to keep Simba at the top of the 16-team league table with their eighth consecutive victory in the league.

“It feels great to finish the year at the top of the table, we wanted to beat Singida to end the year on a high and we are delighted as a team to finish at the top as we head into the New Year,” Kagoma told Pan-Africa Football.

“It was not an easy game, playing against a team with most players that we know each other was not easy. I must congratulate our opponents for giving us a tough game, they did not want to give up and we had to put our best foot forward to wrap up the points.”

Asked on what coach Fadlu Davids had asked him to do during the fixture, Kagoma replied: “He just told me to make sure I dominate the midfield, nothing much.”

Pressed further on whether he did what the coach had asked him, Kagoma said: “I don’t know, it is the coach to tell me if I did it correctly, but the most important thing was to get the win and stay at top of the league.”

Following the win, Simba extended their lead at the top of the table over rivals Young Africans to four points. The Dar es Salaam-based club will now turn their attention to the CAF Confederation Cup where they are engaged in a fierce battle to advance to the quarter-finals out of Group A.

Simba will face Tunisia's CS Sfaxien away on January 5.
