Ivory Coast legend Yaya Toure has sent a heartwarming message to Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo following his move to English Premier giants Manchester City.
Semenyo joined the Citizens from Bournemouth in a deal worth around £65m keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
The 26-year-old will wear the number 42 jersey which was previously worn by Yaya Toure during his eight season’s stint at City where he won three premier league titles, one FA Cup, two Football League Cup and one Community Shield.
City met Semenyo’s release clause which had to be activated by Friday and is agreed for installments over a two year period plus other bonuses.
Semenyo said: “I am so proud to have joined Manchester City,” Semenyo said as quoted by Man City website. “They have set the highest of standards and it’s a club with world-class players, world-class facilities and one of the greatest managers ever in Pep [Guardiola].
“I have so much scope for improvement, so to be at this club, at this stage of my career, is perfect for me. It’s a real privilege to be here. My best football is yet to come, I am sure of that.”
Yaya Toure who won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations after Ivory Coast beat Ghana via penalty shootouts believes Semenyo has taken a huge step towards success.
“A short message to say congratulations for your move to Manchester City, an incredible move and achievement. The number 42 is a very special number and I am proud you have chosen the jersey knowing it will continue its African heritage and I know it’s an exception at heart,” Yaya Toure said in a video shared on social media.
Semenyo who previously played for Bristol City, New Port County, Bath City and Sunderland, has scored 10 goals from 20 games sitting behind new teammate, Erling Haaland (20).
Bournemouth signed Semenyo from Bristol City for about £10m in January 2023 and he left the Cherries after with 32 goals and 13 assists from 110 appearances in all competitions.
Semenyo played a key role in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification where the four time African champions booked a fifth appearance and will be facing Panama, England and Croatia in Group L at the World Cup to be co-hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico.
