Iwobi says Nigeria have quality to win AFCON 2025 in Morocco

Nigeria winger Alex Iwobi believes the Super Eagles have what it takes to challenge for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The West African nation will head into the AFCON after a major setback which saw them miss out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Their journey to reach the global tournament ended in the final playoff round for African teams after they lost 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo, after a 1-1 draw in extra time.

Despite the setback, Iwobi insists Nigeria, who will be under Malian coach Eric Chelle, and will be chasing for their fourth AFCON title, should not be written off.

‘I’d like to say Nigeria will win it’

“Yes, of course, the last AFCON, we were really close, but the only way we can improve from the last AFCON is to win the next one,” Iwobi told Ay Suga YouTube channel as quoted by Complete Sports.

“We’ve got the players to do so, we believe so, and we just have to prove it. I’ll like to speak into existence, I want to manifest, so I’d like to say Nigeria will win it.”

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C, and will lock horns with Tunisia and the East African duo of Uganda and Tanzania. Meanwhile, hosts Morocco will headline Group A and will take on Mali, Zambia and Comoros in what looks a hotly contested pool.

Record seven-time winners Egypt will face a trio of Southern African teams in Group B in the form of last year’s bronze medalists South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe. 2021 champions Senegal go up against Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin and Botswana in Group D. Algeria, winners in 2019, will take on Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea and Sudan in Group E.

Defending champions Ivory Coast will come up against old rivals and five-time winners Cameroon, Gabon and Mozambique in Group F as they look to claim back-to-back titles.
