Former Nigeria international Jay-Jay Okocha has urged the Super Eagles to be consistent with their results after missing out on the opportunity to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Nigeria’s chance to stay on course to qualify went up in smoke after they lost their final qualification round 4-3 on penalties to DR Congo following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
During the African Play-off final at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium, the Super Eagles took the lead courtesy of Onyeka, who powered home a long range effort.
However, Meschack Elia levelled matters before captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive spot-kick to send the Leopards into March’s inter-confederation play-off in Mexico ahead of Nigeria.
“Nigeria’s run in the World Cup qualifiers was a rollercoaster, but we would have loved to see Nigeria qualify with ease,” said Okocha as quoted by RG website.
“We all know football is not an easy game and what I think they should improve on is to be more consistent. They need to stick to winning with top performance in every game.”
Speaking on the upcoming World Cup, Okocha said: “What excites me about the World Cup is having more nations taking part, and the experience of having it take place in three countries at the same time will also be amazing.
“It is really something I look forward to, with millions of fans from around the world.”
The defeat by DR Congo saw Nigeria miss the World Cup for a second successive time. They will now shift focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set for Morocco.
Nigeria have been drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Uganda, and Tunisia. They will kick off their campaign against Taifa Stars on December 23.
