Bayer Leverkusen winger Jeremie Frimpong has revealed his admiration for ex-Ghana internationals Michael Essien, the late Christian Atsu as well as the Ayew brothers, Jordan and Andre.

The 24-year-old was instrumental in Leverkusen’s walk to a German domestic treble of the Bundesliga, the DFB Pokal and the DFL Super Cup last season under the tutelage of Spanish boss Xabi Alonso.

The current Dutch national team player spoke exclusively to Pan-Africa Football.

“For me Michael Essien, Michael Essien was a big one. Chelsea, Real Madrid, the national team."

“Christian Atsu, the Ayew brothers, the one that really caught my eyes was in the 2010 World Cup. Ghana got into the quarter finals against Uruguay. All the players there did really good,” Frimpong told Pan-Africa Football.

Frimpong, who is born to Ghanaian parents, has praised the array of talents dotted across the West African nation even though he is yet to watch the Ghana Premier League.

“The Ghanaian players from the past to the present, they have a lot [of talent] and even the Ghanaians, they are playing in Europe. Of course they have talent," Jeremie Frimpong told Pan-Africa Football.

Frimpong cut his teeth at Manchester City Academy and later transferred to Scottish club Celtic where he spent two seasons.

He talks about the need for all Ghanaian and other African players born abroad to return to their motherland and give back to society.

“I think that for every Ghanaian this is our home land, our skin colour is black and even if you were born in Europe you should remember where you are from, where your parents are from."

“And of course I think they [Ghanaian players born outside] know that as well. Everybody, it doesn’t matter if you are Nigerian or Liberian, if you are black, you are African so you have to come back [home],” Frimpong told Pan-Africa Football.

The Dutch international is in Ghana for the first time in 24-years to support the youth of Dansoman with his Pathway Project.

Frimpong took some time to enjoy a football game with the community folks at the Dansoman Jesus is Alive School Park on Thursday evening.
